The Chuvash Republic is comprised of 317 municipal entities, including 21 municipal districts, 5 urban districts, 291 settlements (with 7 urban communities and 284 rural ones).

The capital of the Republic is the city of Cheboksary (with the population 459.500 people). The biggest towns of Chuvashia are Novocheboksarsk (127.700 people), Kanash (47.100 people), Alatyr (41.600 people), and Shumerlya (33.400 people) (the figures are provided as of January 1, 2010).

The Chuvash Republic is a republic (constituent entity) within the Russian Federation. The current Constitution was adopted on November 30, 2000. The republic is headed by the President, the Republican State Council and the Cabinet of Ministers.

Since December 26, 1993 Chuvashia has been a presidential republic. The first President Nikolay Vasilyevich Fyodorov was elected through a general secret ballot. In 1997 N. Fyodorov was elected the President for the 2nd term in office, to be re-elected for the 3rd one in 2001. On August 29, 2005, as advised by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, during the regular 26th session the State Council of the Chuvash Republic empowered Nikolay Fyodorov as the President of Chuvashia again, thus starting his 4th term in office.

On July 28, 2010 following the advice of the President of Russia Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev the State Council of the Chuvash Republic empowered Mikhail Ignatiev, Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Agriculture, to be the President of the Chuvash Republic.  

On August 29, 2010 Mikhail V. Ignatyev was sworn into office during the solemn inauguration ceremony.

 The President is the highest official and the head of the executive branch of power. Protector of the Constitution, he also takes measures to protect human and civil rights and liberties in accordance with the established procedures, ensures coordinated operation and interaction between the government authorities of the Chuvash Republic.

The Cabinet of Ministers of the Chuvash Republic is formed by the President and reports to him. It is the permanently functioning highest executive branch of the government. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Chuvash Republic ensures compliance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation, execution of all federal laws and other legal regulations of the Russian Federation, Constitution laws and other legal regulations of the Chuvash Republic. The Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers is Nina Vladimirovna Suslonova.

The State Council of the Chuvash Republic is the supreme legislative body, functioning permanently, elected for a period of five years and currently consisting of 44 deputies. The Chairman of the State Council of the Chuvash Republic is Mikhail Alexeyevich Mikhailovsky. The State Council of the Chuvash Republic is engaged in legislative activities, adopts the Constitution of the Chuvash Republic, introduces amendments and addenda to it, deals with issues of administrative-territorial structure, ratifies the republican budget, approves programs of social and economic development of the Republic and monitors their implementation. It also controls execution of Chuvash Republic laws, takes decisions about the time of the republican referendum, asserts state awards and titles of honor. The laws of the Chuvash Republic are signed and divulged by the President. The annual state-of-the-nation address made by the President to the State Council, informing the latter about the work done, setting priorities of the state policy and defining goals and tasks for the forthcoming year, has become a good tradition.

The federal judiciary on the territory of the Republic is represented by the Supreme Court, district (town) courts, and the Court of State Arbitration. The judges of the federal courts are appointed by the President of the Russian Federation. The judiciary of the Chuvash Republic is represented by the justices of peace, appointed by the State Council of the Chuvash Republic following the advice of the Supreme Court Chairman approved by the Chuvash President.

The structure of the local government institutions is includes a representative body of the municipal entity, the head of  the municipal entity, the local administration (the executive-administrative body of the municipal entity) and other bodies formed in accordance with the law About the Structure of the Local Government in the Chuvash Republic as well as with the Charters of municipal entities.

According to the data provided by the Russian Federation Ministry of Justice Administration in the Chuvash Republic, there are 7 regional departments of federal political parties, qualifying for Item 2 of Article 36 of the Federal Law on Political Parties No. 95-FZ of  July 11, 2001. As a result of elections to the State Council of the Chuvash Republic in October 2006, the supreme legislative body is now represented by three political factions: Edinaya Rossiya (United Russia) - 33 deputies, CPRF (The Communist Party of the Russian Federation) - 5 deputies and LDPR (The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia) - 3 deputies. In addition to these, 2 deputies represent the party Spravedlivaya Rossiya (Just Russia Party) and 1 is a non-party deputy.  7 of the deputies work full-time. There are 5 committees established and are functioning on the basis of the State Council. The next scheduled elections to the State Council of the Chuvash Republic will be held in 2011. Chuvashia is characterized by stable political situation and interethnic relations.

The Chuvash Republic has two state languages - Chuvash and Russian.

The Chuvashia symbols of statehood are the Coat of Arms, the Flag and the Anthem.
